We spoke with Thomas, CTO and co-founder of Lium, to discuss the development of Horus, our intelligent tethered balloon.
“The idea came from a simple observation: fixed cameras don’t provide enough coverage, and drones require too much human intervention.”
With Horus, the goal is to monitor a site continuously, without a pilot, 24/7, while reducing its carbon footprint.

“We trained our algorithms on thousands of real-world cases,” explains Thomas.
Thanks to this, Horus can make autonomous decisions in the field.
Developing Horus required months and months of R&D.
“We had to design a system that was lightweight yet durable, capable of staying at altitude for weeks.”
The tethered balloon is connected to a ground station and transmits its data in real-time. Directional motors keep it stable, even in strong winds.
The goal : to combine mobility, durability, and energy efficiency.
One of the major challenges: reducing the ecological impact.
“A drone consumes more and needs to be recharged frequently. Horus, on the other hand, is designed for long-duration surveillance with low energy consumption.”
This approach meets the new expectations of industries: enhanced security without increasing their carbon footprint.
